Study: post-vax delta breakthrough infections are infrequent and when they occur, they're typically shorter in duration (with less potential for spread) than in unvaccinated. "Vaccination is associated with faster decline in viral RNA load." https://t.co/B009fsCPJ6 h/t @EricTopol

While infections (and transmission) can still occur, the vaccines work very well. In CDC's data they showed vaccinated people had a 25-fold reduction in risk of death, a 25-fold reduction in risk of hospitalization, and 8-fold reduction in risk of disease (Disclosure: Pfizer BoD)

It’s critical public health agencies communicate what they know - and don’t know - in a timely way. In crisis, even partial information is better than absence of candid discussion. Decisions are made in real time. Policymakers deserve the best assessments. https://t.co/Dy1gOMTVVR

Just finished reading advance copy of Lifelines by @DrLeanaWen, a sweeping and personal account of her work in public health and efforts to shape healthcare improvement; with lots of lessons and practical advice for policymakers and public health experts. https://t.co/nKcnr5nIaw

The wide divergence between these models suggests difficulty modeling this epidemic wave of delta, likely reflecting in part poor ascertainment of current cases, as well as diverging views on the durability of immunity, velocity and circumstances of spread, and contagiousness.

New ensemble models out from academic groups; shows wide divergence of views. In likeliest scenario (lower vax penetrance, delta like strain) peak of epidemic wave is early/mid September, but huge range in component models lowers confidence in estimates. https://t.co/d9gmjHZ5Zo

More than a year into the pandemic and we still don’t have reliable, timely modeling of where things stand coming out of CDC. It simply doesn’t exist. Hopefully heroes like @youyanggu and others get back into game.

The worst of delta spread, based on some current models, shows a peak in the wave of delta infection occurring sometime in September; with wide variation by region, correlating closely to the extent of vaccination and prior infection from region to region. https://t.co/UTOUHhwar8

In January, when we suggested in @WSJ op ed https://t.co/7bfl0XQ2YM that we should set as goal to sequence 5% of all SARS2 samples - as a tripwire for detecting new strains early enough - this was the response to us (on Twitter!!) from a senior @CDCgov official, to the proposal.

This is a question of resources, capabilities, and mission. We don’t have the equivalent of a JSOC for public health crisis. We don’t have a heavy lift capability that can do all the tracking and deployment needed to monitor and respond to a fast moving infectious disease crisis.

18 months into the pandemic, and after many pleadings and prodding’s, including from Congress, CDC still doesn’t have a robust system for comprehensive, near-real-time surveillance of new variants. Data on their web site is at least 3 weeks old, even as new variants move fast.

Salmon hot dogs and cobia fish burgers. Since it’s fish it’s regulated by FDA, not USDA, and is overseen by FDA for its safety, sanitary production, wholesome ingredients, and honest labeling.

Given how transmissible Delta variant is, around 85% of population will end up with some level of immunity to Covid before it stops spreading at present rates. People have choice how they acquire immunity: some will acquire it through vaccination, others through natural infection
